Lagoons, pine forest and high-altitude scenery

The seven lagoons surrounded by Montezuma pine form one of the most photographed landscapes near Mexico City. Here are tips for photographing them and what to expect each season.

Best light

The softest light is in the morning after opening (09:00) and at sunset. The water is usually calmer and reflects the sky.

What to photograph

The permanent lagoons (Quila, Zempoala, Compila), the viewpoints, the interpretive trails and wildlife such as the ocelot or various birds.

By season

Rainy season (Jun–Aug): full lagoons and dramatic skies. Dry season (Nov–Feb): clean, cold air, ideal for crisp landscapes.
